Message from the founder

Hey! Assalamu alaikum! My name is Zakiya and I am the founder of Kalimah. In January 2023 I began my MA in Professional Writing at the University of Westminster. As part of the course, we were given a choice between doing a dissertation or a ‘professional project’ with something to do with the writing industry. I’d known for a while that I wanted to do something for Muslim women and so I began planning. I thought about my own struggles and how I have often felt uncomfortable with the sort of material I had to engage with in literary spaces and writing courses, as well as the noticeable lack of positive Muslim representation in British literature and the Media. With all of this in mind, I decided to launch Kalimah to provide a safe space for Muslim women who write or are interested in beginning their writing journey.

I hope to develop Kalimah into a media platform for all Muslim women where you can:

  • Share work and connect with others for collaborations
  • Find Muslimah writers for paid projects/jobs
  • View and enjoy the work of Muslimah writers and subscribe to/tip your favorites!
  • Receive feedback on writing and make use of our editing services
  • Participate in online courses and in-person workshops to improve writing skills

My aim is for Kalimah to become  a space for all Muslimah creatives, whether you are a writer, photographer, artist, designer or artisan, I would love for you to find a home here.

I am also a huge advocate for mental health and have created a space on the website dedicated to mental wellness and therapy, which will be run by a qualified Muslimah psychotherapist. You can find out more about us both on The Kalimah Podcast!

Please feel free to email me with any questions, feedback or comments. I want this to be a space for us, by us, so I’m open to hearing all of you thoughts insha Allah!

Lots of love,

Your sis Zakiya x
