Message From The Founder

Assalamu alaikum!

I’m Zakiya, the founder of Kalimah. In January 2023, I began my MA in Professional Writing at the University of Westminster. As part of the course, I had the choice between writing a dissertation or doing a ‘professional project’ related to the writing industry. I knew for a while that I wanted to create something for Muslim women, so I began planning.

Reflecting on my own experiences, I’ve often felt uncomfortable with the material I had to engage with in literary spaces and writing courses. The lack of positive Muslim representation in British literature and the media only added to my frustrations. With all of this in mind, I launched Kalimah to offer a safe and creative space for Muslim women who write or are just starting their writing journey.

My goal is for Kalimah to be a home for all Muslimah creatives—whether you’re a writer, photographer, artist, designer, or artisan, I hope you find a space here.

Feel free to email me at zakiya@kalimah.uk with any questions, feedback, or thoughts! This is a space for us, by us, and I’m open to hearing all your ideas, insha’Allah!
Lots of love,
Your sis, Zakiya x
