Divine Awakening

Morning slumber pins me down, “let it go for tomorrow”

Tossing, turning, tempted to snuggle in the pillow just a little,

with closed eyes and senses awake, plucked from the lap of ghafalat (heedlessness)

Planted on the ground, hands on the chest with humility—glorifying the Lord.

Self-indulgence, befriending laziness, tempts me to let go of the noon

Many more accomplices peep from LED screens, inviting a blast

Lip-smacking cuisine and fresh delivery of juicy scoops with kin

A splash of water on the face before cleanup to join the fun—

Spontaneously channels its way to the mouth and nostrils, rolling to the arms,

Reaches the crown like a spark that ignites the flame of faith

Drifting into dreamland in nocturnal rest, caught off guard by the baser self,

Lulled into a lie of self-assurance: not every night counts, “you do it regularly, diligently,” just about to give in to the tired body and soul… when—

The circadian rhythm is broken by the whirring and buzzing of something flying

Fear of a flying insect saves the fear of the Divine in me.

Ya Muqallibal Quloob, Thabbit Qalbi ala Deenik

Turner of Hearts, make my heart steadfast on the Deen
